The real estate photography case studies are a weekly segment where I provide a composition analysis of a real estate photograph and a look into the real estate photography technique used. If you have a specific type of room or exterior space that you would like to see in this segment or you would like one of your photographs featured, please get in touch.
Real Estate Photography Technique: Rooftop Pool
This week’s image was captured during a daytime photo-shoot of an apartment in a city-fringe apartment building. The subject of this image is the shared rooftop pool with its wooden decking, lounge chairs and spectacular views of the city and mountains for the potential buyer or tenant to enjoy. Three bracketed exposures were recorded to capture the limited dynamic range between the sky, building facades, and foreground.

1.0
The composition shows the swimming pool in the bottom third of the image, the mountain and city views in the centre third and the crisp blue sky solely in the top third of the image.
2.0
The position of the camera assists with cropping the houses in the middle third with the ‘wet edge’ line of the swimming pool and shows the greenery in front of the city buildings.
Lowering the height of the camera would have hidden the neighbouring houses and put more emphasis on the city skyline; however, the trees amongst the houses add a nice touch of greenery to the image.
3.0
The angles of the pool edges help guide the viewer’s eye through the image from the foreground and out to the view from the rooftop swimming pool.
4.0
The stylish pool chairs ‘close’ the left-hand side of the image and highlight the furniture available to owners, tenants and guests when using the facilities. The right-hand edge of the image is cropped at the wooden deck for consistency with the left-hand edge of the image.
5.0
The composition splits the distribution of city and mountains evenly from the centre of the image to establish a sense of balance between the natural and built environment.
