Workshop Wednesday: Kitchen

Workshop Wednesdays are a weekly segment where I provide a composition analysis of a real estate photograph. If you have a specific type of room or exterior space that you would like to see in this segment, please get in touch.

This week’s image was taken during a twilight estate photo-shoot of a six-bedroom home. The subject of the image is the large galley style kitchen that connects the living room to the dining room. The purpose of this image was to highlight the cabinetry within the kitchen, in addition to the fixtures and connection to the living room. The camera was elevated (on the tripod) approx. 30cm above the kitchen benchtops to ensure the ample size of the benchtop is clearly visible.

1.0

The subject is evenly distributed within the rule of thirds grid with each of the two separate kitchen benches in the left and right vertical columns of the grid. The ceiling and flooring component of the image is evenly positioned in the top and bottom horizontal grids, and the distant features (of the décor and living room) are position in the centre thirds.

2.0

The kitchen bench and white walls/cabinetry are equally distributed on the left and right side which provides balance within the image. The colour white dominates the left and right sides of the images which represents purity, cleanliness and composure.

3.0

The converging horizontal lines of the cabinetry and marble benchtop edges, and the window frame lead the viewers eye from the outer edges of the image towards the centre of the image. This effectively leads the viewer past the main features of the kitchen including the drawers, deep double sink, stove, and oven. The converging lines eventually lead to the connecting living room, which is adjacent to the outdoor entertainment area. This outdoor entertainment area is not clearly visible, but is not the feature of this image.

4.0

The large sofa is the feature positioned in the centre of the image within the living room. It is a closed form  that protrudes a feeling of boldness and seriousness.

I have included all three images of this kitchen below that were captured during this shoot to provide some perspective on the camera position and the other ideal compositions.
